Blanket Statements: New Quilts by Kaffe Fassett at the Michener Art Museum

Kaffe Fassett, an American-born, internationally-known textile artist, had work on display at the James A Michener Art Museum in Doylestown from November 15, 2015 to February 21, 2016.  I went expecting to see modern and antique quilts, and was not disappointed.  The Fassett quilts, with their bright colors, were beautiful.

I particularly liked the one with buttons on each block.

I liked it so much I copied the idea for a quilt I made made out of old neckties.

Pattern Pieces: Can you make a quilt out of wood?

Elsewhere in the museum there was another exhibit around the question of what makes a quilt a quilt?  Is it by definition a three layered blanket held together by stitching?  Or is it any patterned object?  The exhibit examined pattern, shape, and color as it related to quilts as both utilitarian and artistic objects.

This “quilt” made from barn boards in the traditional log cabin pattern was my favorite. The artist used materials salvaged after SuperStorm Sandy.

Not too far behind in my favor was this multi-panel piece with lighter and darker shades and geometric shapes all coming together in a more contemporary pattern.

I borrowed this pattern, too, to make another quilt from neckties.

You can find color and patterns everywhere.  To see more of the beauty of Kaffe Fassett’s fabric and his fabulous quilts, go to his website http://www.kaffefassett.com/ . If you have some old neckties hanging around and want to make a quilt with them, I can help.
